General Information

The sleeping beauty of Southeast Asia, the Republic of Laos has been isolated for decades and therefore tourism is still very much in its infancy here. Time seems to slow down in Laos, as even in the capital city, Vientiane, the pace of life is refreshingly unhurried. The government is instigating a green approach to its development, with the intention of keeping Laos’ pristine ecological system as natural as possible. This makes Laos a dream destination for nature and wildlife lovers, who are seeking the true meaning of getting away from it all.

Besides being a land where no one is in a hurry, Laos is also a land of Buddhist traditions where you will find saffron-robed teens peek curiously out from wats (temples). And while earning the title of being the world’s most heavily bombed country hardly seems like a ringing endorsement, a visit to Luang Prabang’s World Heritage temples soothes the soul. Explore Vientiane, the world’s smallest capital, as it moves at the same serene pace as the Mekong river floating by its shores.

Laos has a tropical monsoon climate with three distinct seasons. The best time to visit Laos is from November to February, when temperatures are cooler, humidity is lower, and conditions are ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities. March to May is hot and dry, while the rainy season (June–October) brings lush landscapes, fewer crowds, and occasional travel disruptions due to heavy rainfall—perfect for travelers seeking greener scenery and quieter experiences.

Getting around Laos is slower but rewarding, matching the country’s relaxed pace of life. Domestic flights connect major cities like Vientiane, Luang Prabang, and Pakse, saving time on long distances. Buses and minivans are the most common and affordable options, while boats along the Mekong River offer scenic travel between northern destinations. In cities, tuk-tuks and bicycles are popular for short trips, making local transport easy and immersive.

Most travelers can enter Laos easily with a Visa on Arrival or Laos e-Visa, available to citizens of many countries. A tourist visa typically allows a stay of up to 30 days and requires a passport valid for at least six months, a passport photo, and a visa fee. Entry points include major international airports and select land borders. Always check the latest visa requirements before travel, as regulations may vary by nationality.

Laos Tailored
Experiences

After the rice harvest, Lao villages burst into song and celebration during Boun Khoun Khao. Families gather to express gratitude to the land and guardian spirits for their bountiful crops. Offerings of rice, fruits, and flowers are made at local temples. Traditional Lam Vong circle dances, folk songs, and communal feasts fill the nights with laughter.

Pi Mai Lao is the grandest celebration in Laos — a three-day water festival marking both the solar and Buddhist New Year. Streets transform into joyful scenes of water splashing, symbolizing the washing away of misfortune. Sand stupas are built at temples, Buddha images are bathed, and flower processions fill the air with fragrance. In Luang Prabang, parades of gilded Buddha statues and traditional performances captivate travelers.

In southern Laos, the Boat Racing Festival of Champasak transforms the Mekong River into a lively stage of speed and spirit. Longboats carved from single trees glide across the water as teams paddle in unison to the beat of drums. The races honor the river’s guardian spirits and mark the renewal of the agricultural season.

The That Luang Festival is the most important religious and national celebration in Laos. Thousands of monks and pilgrims dressed in saffron and white gather at the gleaming golden stupa to offer alms and prayers. The festival begins with the colorful wax castle procession (Phasat Phueng) from Wat Simeuang to That Luang, followed by days of traditional games, music, and dance.
